Atari” is one of the processes of drawing illustrations.
The Atari is the first step in the drafting process and is important because it is used to create a blueprint for the illustration.

If this blueprint is distorted, the finished illustration will be distorted and unbalanced.
On the other hand, if you are able to draw well, the balance will be less likely to be distorted and the quality of the illustration will be improved.

In this article, I’ll show you the basic way to draw Atari and the points to consider when drawing them.

1. What is Atari?

When you look at the making of pictures on the Internet, you may have seen a “doll-like object” being drawn before drawing a person.
Tress de Draw! The doll-like thing that is also used as a material for tress de draw!
In addition, the crosshairs used to draw a face are also Ataris.

Atari is the process of drawing a blueprint using simple shapes to show what will be drawn where in the illustration.
In this process, you need to
(1) Where and in what pose to place the person on the screen.
(2) How to draw the parts of the person and where to place them (balance).

In this article, I would like to focus on (2), the Atari of the figure.

2. Types of Ataris

There are several ways to draw Atari on a person, but I will introduce four main types here.
(1) Stick figure type
(2) Block doll type
(3) Bone doll type
(4) Body type

The difficulty level of these four types increases in the order of (1) to (4).

(1) Stick figure type

Difficulty level ★☆☆☆☆
This is an easy drawing method even for beginners because it is flat.

(2) Block doll type

Difficulty level ★★☆☆☆
The difficulty level is a little higher because of the three-dimensional shapes used in the drawing.
The legs and arms are also drawn as three-dimensional figures, so it is easy to draw them even if the way the legs and hands look changes when the angle changes.

(3) Bone doll type

Difficulty level ★★★☆☆
This is for people who want to draw more realistically.
This is the type of drawing where you simply draw the skeleton and then add the muscles, so you need to have some knowledge of the human skeleton and muscles.
By adding muscles after drawing the skeletal figure, you can draw a more realistic body.

(4) Elementary body type

Difficulty: ★★★★
This is a rather simple way to draw a naked body.
The level of difficulty is much higher, and unless you are used to drawing the human body to some extent, it will be difficult to deal with imbalances and changes in angle.

I recommend the stick figure type (1) for beginners.
If you draw the most basic type (1) several times, you will gradually get the balance of the body in your mind.
Another advantage is that it is easy to get used to drawing Ataris because they are easy to draw.

Therefore, if you are not used to drawing Ataris, or if you have been drawing Ataris for some time but find that your illustrations are distorted, it may be a good idea to try the basic Stickman type (1) to get the hang of drawing balance and Ataris.
